Newport's Boat Parade Reaches Every Shore at a Different Hour. Here's How to Pick Yours.

At 6:30 p.m. on each night from December 16 to 20, the first boats in the 118th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade leave the tip of Lido Isle. At 9:00 p.m. they return to the same spot. The official 2026 route map lists 57 points with estimated times in between. Someone on the sand at Marina Park sees the lead boats at 6:54. A table at Rusty Pelican on Mariners' Mile sees them at 8:43.

So the two ends of Newport get the same parade at different hours. Because the route covers 14 miles of harbor, each stretch of shoreline has its own part of the evening. The drone shows, the opening-night extras and the best dinner reservations are all set around that clock. When you choose where to stand, you're also choosing what time of night you'll be out.

The Harbor, Hour by Hour

These times come from the official 2026 map. They mark when the parade is expected to reach each point.

Window Stretch of shoreline What's on that stretch
6:30 to 6:57 Lido Isle to the Peninsula's bay side Lido Isle Yacht Club, Rhine Channel, Woody's Wharf, Buona Forchetta, CasaDami, Shorebird, Marina Park, Lighthouse Café, 15th Street Beach
7:02 to 7:16 Balboa Village 10th Street Beach, Newport Harbor Yacht Club, Newport Landing, the Balboa Fun Zone, Harborside and Balboa Pavilion, Davey's Locker
7:25 to 7:41 The harbor mouth Peninsula Point Beach, Pirate's Cove, Channel Reef and China Cove, the U.S. Coast Guard station, Balboa Yacht Club, Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club
7:45 to 8:11 Around Balboa Island Little Island Beach, South Bayfront and Grand Canal, the Balboa Island Ferry Landing, Collins Island, North Bayfront
8:18 to 8:39 Upper bay to the resort Harbor Island, Tavern House Kitchen + Bar and SOL Mexican Cocina at the PCH Bridge, Bay Shores, Balboa Bay Resort, Newport Sea Base
8:42 to 9:00 Mariners' Mile and home to Lido Rusty Pelican, Billy's at the Beach, Louie's by the Bay, The Winery, Lido Marina Village, Malibu Farm, Lido Bottle Works, HanaHaus, finish at Lido Isle

The Peninsula Gets the Early Evening

On the Peninsula's bay side, the parade has come and gone before 7:20. That suits families with young children, and it suits anyone who wants dinner after the boats instead of during them. Woody's Wharf sees the lead boats at 6:51. The Peninsula Village cluster of Buona Forchetta, CasaDami and Shorebird follows a minute later, and Marina Park at 6:54.

Opening night makes the most of this end. On Wednesday, December 16, fireworks are scheduled off Newport Pier at about 6:15 p.m. The parade organizers note that the show goes ahead only if federal, state and local safety guidelines allow it. On the same evening, Marina Park hosts a free holiday market from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., with more than 35 local makers, food vendors, live music and children's activities. The 10.5-acre park is the largest public viewing area on the route and has 177 parking spaces.

Balboa Village has the best timing on the route. The drone show at Peninsula Park, near the Fun Zone, runs at 6:45 and 8:00 p.m. every night of the parade. The lead boats reach the Fun Zone, the Balboa Peninsula Ferry Landing, Harborside and Balboa Pavilion at 7:15, and Davey's Locker at 7:16. That means a drone show, then the boats half an hour later, then a second drone show. No other spot on the route lines up three things that closely.

For parking, the Newport Beach Indy's 2025 parade guide said Balboa Boulevard gets packed and the Marina Park lot fills quickly. For Fun Zone viewing, it suggested parking near Balboa Pier and walking over.

Balboa Island Sees the Parade Twice

The middle of the route is quieter, with yacht clubs and coves where the harbor narrows. The boats pass Peninsula Point Beach at 7:25 and cross to Pirate's Cove at 7:32. Channel Reef and China Cove follow at 7:33, then the Coast Guard station, Balboa Yacht Club and Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club by 7:41.

Then the parade circles Balboa Island. It reaches the Balboa Island Bridge at 7:45, works along the South Bayfront and Grand Canal around 7:54, and passes the ferry landing at 8:01. After looping Collins Island at 8:03, it runs back along the North Bayfront at 8:07 and returns to the bridge at 8:11. A short walk across the island, from one bayfront to the other, gets you two views of the parade about 13 minutes apart. The Marine Avenue restaurants appear in the parade's dining directory, including Barolo by the Sea and Basilic Restaurant.

Last year's Indy guide advised against parking on the island. It suggested parking on Bayside Drive and walking in instead.

Mariners' Mile and Lido Get the Late Hour

The upper bay sees the boats last, which makes it the natural choice for a long dinner. Harbor Island comes at 8:18. Tavern House Kitchen + Bar and SOL Mexican Cocina at the PCH Bridge follow at 8:26, and Balboa Bay Resort at 8:35.

The second drone show is at this end of the harbor. Drones have flown over the Balboa Bay Resort since the parade's first drone display in 2023, which Stu News Newport covered at the time. This year the Balboa Bay Club shows run at 6:15 and 8:15 p.m., except on opening night, when the early show starts at 6:00. At 8:15 you watch the drones, and the parade arrives 20 minutes later. The early show is mostly for guests who come in for drinks before dinner.

Then the restaurants line up close together. City Cruises and the Mariners' Mile docks see the boats at 8:42 and Rusty Pelican at 8:43. Billy's at the Beach and Louie's by the Bay follow at 8:44, and The Winery Restaurant & Wine Bar at 8:45. At Lido Marina Village, the boats arrive at 8:46, followed by Malibu Farm and Lido Bottle Works at 8:47 and HanaHaus at 8:48. All of them appear on the parade's Dine & Watch list, along with A+O at Balboa Bay Resort, Harborside, Newport Landing Restaurant and GuacAmigos. If you book an 8:00 table at any of these, the boats should arrive about when your main course does. One caution from the Indy's 2025 guide: boats docked at Lido Marina Village can block the view.

Newport Sea Base, on the upper bay, is listed as a reserved-seating option on the parade's viewing page. The route map puts the boats there at 8:39.

Leaving the Clock Behind

The only way to see the whole loop is from the water. The parade's boat-viewing list names City Cruises, Davey's Locker and Newport Landing, East Meets West Excursions, Gondola Adventures, Newport Yachts and OC Boat Rentals, among others. Newport Landing says it runs cruises on all five parade nights. Several of these operators are on the route themselves. Newport Landing and Davey's Locker sit in Balboa Village, which the parade reaches at about 7:15, and City Cruises is at the Mariners' Mile docks, reached at 8:42.

Before the Week Arrives

  1. Weather. The parade goes ahead in rain or shine. Only a Coast Guard small-craft advisory cancels it, and the decision is made at 6:00 p.m. on the night, according to the parade FAQ.
  2. Parking. City parking lots stay open during the parade. The Indy's 2025 guide warned that weekends are the most crowded and recommended allowing extra travel time.
  3. Ring of Lights. Waterfront homes, businesses and yacht clubs can enter the parade's lighting competition for $35. Entries are due before noon on Friday, December 11, and judging is on Monday, December 14, two days before the first boats leave Lido. If your house faces the water, the map shows when the parade will pass it each night. For a Collins Island address, that's about 8:03. On Bay Shores, it's 8:30.
