The dining room has a fireplace, high ceilings, and hardwood floors.
Hollywood director and producer Baz Luhrmann, alongside his wife and frequent collaborator, costume designer Catherine Martin, are re-listing their 19th-century New York City townhouse for $15.9 million. This marks the third time the couple has put the five-story Anglo-Italianate row house on the market, having previously listed it for $19.995 million in 2022 and $17.99 million in September of last year.
The parlor level offers a living room with full-length, round-arch windows that face south over Stuyvesant Square Park.
The couple purchased the six-bedroom property in 2017 for $13.5 million and undertook extensive renovations. However, they never moved in, choosing to ride out the pandemic in their native Australia. By the time the lockdowns ended, they had become empty nesters and no longer needed the space.
For more than 10 years, the home has been owned by Australian film director Baz Luhrmann and his costume, production, and set designer wife, Catherine Martin.
“We just thought, ‘This is ridiculous,’” Martin told the Wall Street Journal in 2022. “The house has been empty for nearly three years. And somebody should be enjoying it. But it’s breaking our hearts.”
The 8,500-square-foot home has six bedrooms, five full bathrooms, and two partial bathrooms.
The 8,500-square-foot abode is located on the northern end of the Stuyvesant Square Historic District in Gramercy, an area filled with charming 19th-century buildings. The 28-foot-wide home stands out in a city where townhouses typically range from 18 to 20 feet wide.
A Juliet balcony is on the parlor level.
The 1850s-built house sits directly across from the park. It features a balcony running along the width of the second floor, high-ceilinged rooms with large windows, and arched doorways throughout. An elevator and whimsically winding staircase connect the floors. Original moldings and five fireplaces add to the home’s historical charm.
The home was completely renovated in 2019.
The primary suite is situated at the rear of the parlor level and comes with an ensuite bathroom, a walk-in closet, and a private terrace. Prior to Luhrmann and Martin’s ownership, Clifford Jordan, a renowned jazz tenor saxophonist, lived on the fourth floor for decades. That area is still a standalone suite set up with a living room, bar, gym, bedroom, and bathroom.
The townhome has five fireplaces.
The kitchen reflects the couple’s signature style, featuring white subway tiles, a marble island, and dark wooden cabinetry. It leads directly to a backyard with ivy-clad brick walls.
The extra-wide five-level townhome is in the heart of Manhattan's Gramercy neighborhood.
Luhrmann and Martin, known for their work on "The Great Gatsby" and "Moulin Rouge," may be back in Australia for the foreseeable future. “We shot Elvis entirely on the Gold Coast in Queensland and will continue to develop shows to be shot there,” they told The Daily Mail in September.
Steve Gold of The Corcoran Group holds the listing. Interior Marketing Group styled the dwelling with refreshed furnishings and art.
